THE BATTLE FOR THE 'LIBERATION
OF THE MIND' Even
from the time we
are in our mother's womb we start to receive
prejudices, bias and partiality from our genes,
from own parents, from the family generally,
from friends, from our race, culture, history
and tradition. But not everything we receive
is the truth, the whole truth. So instead of
being passive and allowing ourselves to 'go
with the flow', not asking any questions about
what is really relevant to the meaning of life,
we all have to rise above environmental conditioning
to continue to battle for the liberation of
the mind.
To use an extreme example, there are some whose
environmental
conditioning tells them to accept the sacrifice
of people blowing themselves up as suicide bombers.
There are those in the Catholic Church who grow
up believing that if they remarry while their
partner is still alive, they will go to hell
for eternity. There are those to-day believing
questionable writings by unknown persons written
thousands of years ago. The battle for the liberation
of the mind will only be successful when we
are willing to subject everything we hold sacred
to the tests of reason and evidence.
If things we believe are unsupported by evidence
and do not make sense, they can be absolutely
wrong - because all 'beliefs' are subjective.
There is now a great deal of repeatable empirical
evidence for the afterlife and to me objectivity
and repeatability are measures which help in
the liberation of the mind.

forget the time a lady told me that when she

her near death experience he said, "it's
all in the mind". Doctors do have a duty
to be complementary to what their patients tell
