COMMENTARY: THE EVIDENCE IS OUT THERE Much of the best evidence for the afterlife is today virtually unknown to those who have not given the subject the serious study that it deserves. The Cross Correspondences of Frederick Myers is one example.
Myers was a Cambridge Classics scholar and writer late last century. He was also one of the pioneers who founded the Society for Psychical Research and was involved in investigation of the afterlife. His brilliant plan was to have someone in the afterlife send a series of messages to different mediums in different parts of the world that, on their own, would mean nothing, But when all the messages were sent to a central location and put together, they would make sense. He talked about it with his fellow leaders of the Society for Psychical Research and they agreed to try.
After Myers died in 1901 more than a dozen different mediums in different countries began receiving a series of incomplete scripts through automatic writing signed by Frederick Myers. Later there were scripts signed by his fellow leaders of the Society for Psychical Research, Professor Henry Sidgwick and Edmund Gurney, as they too died. The scripts were all about obscure classical subjects and did not make sense on their own. But when the mediums were told to contact a central address and the scripts were assembled, they fitted together like the pieces of a jig-saw.
In all, more than three thousand scripts were transmitted over thirty years. Some of them were more than forty typed pages long. Together they fill 24 volumes and 12,000 pages. Here's a light-hearted explanation.
PROFESOR ARCHIE ROY AND TRICIA ROBERTSON (pictured left and right) completed a five-year study of mediums in a project called PRISM (Psychic Research Involving Selected Mediums). This resulted in three peer-reviewed papers in the Society for Psychical Research Journal. The third paper showed that even in triple-blind conditions a good medium can deliver relevant information to a sitter with odds against chance being a million to one.

BEYOND REASONABLE DOUBT Gordon Smith is the 'medium's medium' whose outstanding gifts are recognised by prominent sceptics. He has been tested in laboratory conditions at Glasgow University, with astonishing results.
In his 1918 book Beyond Reasonable Doubt, he agrees with my argument that the best way to assess the evidence for the afterlife is to use the same standards we usually use to assess disputes in human affairs - the standards of the law court.

WE REMEMBER: BERTHA HARRIS, ONE OF THE GREATEST MEDIUMS OF ALL TIME It is on record that Bertha Harris was Sir Winston Churchill's special advisor/counselor during the Second World War. On one occasion, a man named Thompson had a sitting with Bertha Harris. She did not know him, or what he did for a living, but she gave him a strong warning - not to go on the airship R101. She told him it would crash and many would lose their lives. Bertha Harris was so concerned about this she discussed it with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle at the time. But Thompson ignored the warning and went on the airship. He was one of the forty-six people killed.
