COMMENTARY: THE AFTERLIFE EVIDENCE MARATHON It is really important that, in the excitement over the fabulous monetary prizes in Robert Bigelow's Institute of Consciousness Research Afterlife Essay Prize, we don't lose sight of the bigger picture. Raising the consciousness of the world about the afterlife is a team sport and a marathon, not an individual 100 metre sprint. We are all in this together for the long haul.

The wonderful evidence of the afterlife that we now have is thanks to the courage and dedication of hundreds of thousands of wonderful people both living and discarnate. We are so grateful for the dedication of the spirit teams and for the circles who sat faithfully every week for years to help develop brilliant mediums; the EVP and ITC pioneers who spent years listening through headphones waiting for a single voice; the pioneers like Dr. Ian Stevenson who trekked through remote villages recording stories of reincarnated children. And then there are the doctors and nurses who collated the experiences of the dying and of those who came back from a near-death experience.

To make an impact the evidence had to be shared, and here we have to thank the courageous pioneer writers and investigators like Alan Kardec, Sir William Crookes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Arthur Findlay. There were wonderful mediums, healers, and inspirational speakers who gave demonstrations to thousands. These pioneers took a stand against ignorance and fear, against atheist skepticism and repressive religion that sought to keep our souls playing small.

More recently we have all the authors, filmmakers, bloggers, podcasters, and media people who are taking the message to the multitudes despite the outrageous distortions by the organised skeptics and debunkers like those who dominate Wikipedia.


N. RILEY HEAGERTY ON THE MEDIUMSHIP OF EMILY FRENCH One of the books that we think has the most compelling evidence of the afterlife is Riley Heagerty's "The French Revelation". At last Sunday's Zoom Global Gathering he shared how a personal tragedy led to a 35-year search.





THE ARMCHAIR SKEPTICS
Some years ago filmmaker and media producer Dan Drasin wrote a brilliant satirical piece on the tactics used by closed-minded skeptics that everyone working to share the evidence for the afterlife has encountered.

ZEN AND THE ART OF DEBUNKERY OR HOW TO DEBUNK JUST ABOUT ANYTHING

I. SETTING THE STAGE
•Before commencing to debunk, prepare your equipment. Equipment needed: one armchair.

• Put on the right face. Cultivate a condescending air certifying that your personal opinions are backed by the full faith and credit of God. Adopting a disdainful, upper-class manner is optional but highly recommended.

• Employ vague, subjective, dismissive terms such as “ridiculous,” “trivial,” “crackpot,” or “bunk,” in a manner that purports to carry the full force of scientific authority.

Do yourself a favour and learn to recognise these tactics.


WHY DON'T MORE PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT THE EVIDENCE FOR THE AFTERLIFE? The combined pressure by science and religion in Western society has created a "taboo" or prohibition on publicly investigating or even talking about psychic phenomena (psi) or the afterlife. THREE NEW SCALES CONFIRM THE SURVIVAL OF HUMAN CONSCIOUSNESS AFTER PHYSICAL DEATH This booklet by Maxine Meilleur was a submitted essay to the 2021 Essay Contest by the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies. It has three new scales to measure human consciousness in evidence of survival. The three scales are the Awareness Scale, the Higher Order Scale, and the Philip Scale. These scales are derived from existing scales the medical field uses to measure consciousness in living beings. These scales are applied to cases of mental mediumship, the Scole experiments, and the Leslie Flint Direct voice archived. This booklet demonstrates and explains how several cases within the Leslie Flint archives show the highest objective evidence in support of the survival of human consciousness after bodily death. SCIENTIST SIR WILLIAM CROOKES SPEAKS THROUGH LESLIE FLINT Michael Tymn's wonderful book The Afterlife Explorers Volume 1 contains a most interesting chapter on the work of Sir William Crookes, the most revered scientist of his day who investigated and spoke out in favor of physical mediumship. Here Sir William Crookes talks through direct voice medium Leslie Flint about the challenges of being a medium and the complexities of physical mediumship.





SPIRIT-INSPIRED ART
Over at least the last one hundred years there have been many kinds of mediums who have produced paintings and drawings supposedly inspired by spirit contact. Consider the following.

LUIZ GASPERETTO - BRAZILIAN MEDIUM
In Stanislav Grof's (pictured) book "When the Impossible Happens" there's a chapter about Luiz Antonio Gasparetto, a psychologist from Brazil who can go into trance and paint in the style of a wide range of dead famous painters (Monet, Picasso, Rembrandt, da Vinci, Modigliani, Manet, van Gogh, Gauguin, etc). He doesn't just paint exact replicas of existing paintings but "new motifs rendered in easily recognizable styles of individual artists".

Dr. Grof describes how they actually turned all the lights off except for one little red light over the paper (red so that he couldn't distinguish color)...he would at times paint with two hands two different paintings at the same time and even did one upside down under the table with his right foot.

Loyd Auerbach who was present at one of the demonstrations writes: "The climax of the demonstration was when he did four paintings at once: one with each hand, one with each bare foot (these being done under the table at which he was seated), while his eyes were closed and he carried on a conversation. Each of the four paintings, by the way, was supposedly by a different one of the spirit artists (and they were, in fact, in four distinct styles that an art expert there related to the named artists)."







WHAT IS PRECIPITATION MEDIUMSHIP?
It is an incredibly rare and beautiful form of spirit communication that includes images, writings, and even signatures that “precipitate” out of the ether onto a surface. Colorful pigments (most often supplied by a medium) are reformed by a spirit and laid down intelligently so that the final product has meaning to the recipient or witness. Neither human hands nor physical writing/drawing/painting tools are involved directly in the process of creating this phenomena.
