COMMENTARY: SPIRITUALISM AND SPIRITISM —WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
Spiritualists believe that communication with the deceased is possible, both directly and through mediums. Some Spiritualists hold meetings in Spiritualist Churches, where they offer spiritual healing and have mediums bring through messages from those who have died as evidence for the afterlife. There is an agreed set of seven or nine principles that many churches support, but it is left open to people on how to interpret them. Read more about Spiritualism.
Spiritism is structured around the teachings of high-level spirits that were collated by Allan Kardec in "The Spirits' Book", "The Mediums' Book" and several others. They emphasise reincarnation, spiritual healing, selfless service, and the teachings of Jesus.
Spiritism has about 13 million followers in 36 countries. The largest number is in Brazil with about 3.8 million served by a network of 13,000 Spiritist Centres where people can receive reiki-like energy treatments, diagnosis by medical intuitives, classes, training as mediums/healers, and fellowship with others wanting personal development. Spiritist organisations are strictly non-commercial and all treatments and activities are free. Mediumship is focused on healing and spiritual evolution.
DR. EMMA BRAGDON ON SPIRITIST HOSPITALS IN BRAZIL One way to understand Spiritism in practice is to look at the way Spiritist psychiatric hospitals work. Dr. Emma Bragdon is the Founder/ Executive Director of Integrative Mental Health University, IMHU.org. Since 2001 she has been researching the way the 50 Spiritist psychiatric hospitals in Brazil include spiritual treatments for mental and physical illness. CHILDREN AND THE AFTERLIFE: A DOCUMENTARY BY DR. KEITH PARSONS
Communicating through Geraldine Cummins, the famous Irish medium, a girl named Elizabeth, who had died at age 15, told her mother that there were so many different places and conditions on her side that she’d be bewildered by it all. A boy named Billy, who died in an auto accident at age 12, communicated, “We make things here by thinking about them,” and went on to tell of other discoveries in his celestial condition.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THOSE WHO DIE SUDDENLY IN WAR? In Times of War: Messages of Wisdom from Soldiers in the Afterlife book presents some of the best and most convincing cases of life after death, many of which also touch on graphic descriptions of exactly what happened when the communicators died – details which we have not read in other books.
It gives wonderful insight into the adjustment issues faced by those who die suddenly, which would make it an excellent book for groups exploring mediumship. And, finally, it looks at issues that affect us all – forgiveness, repentance, how to navigate loss and how to live in a way that ensures we end up in the afterlife with a room with a view rather than a damp basement. VALIDATING THE VOICES FROM A DEEP TRANCE MEDIUM Charles Hapgood was a professor at Keene State in New Hampshire. He spent 15 years investigating the mediumship of Elwood Babbitt (1921 – 2001). Hapgood made recordings of at least 100 different trance entities who spoke through the medium including Jesus, Albert Einstein, Mark Twain, and the Hindu god Vishnu. He was keen to show that the entities were different from each other and different from the medium. He found that EEGs of the medium's brain showed a completely different pattern according to which entity was in control. He also showed that different entities responded differently to a word association test.
Hapgood coauthored three books with Babbitt. The first, "Voices of Spirit" is a scientific and historical approach to the world of mediumship. The second book "The God Within - A Testament of Vishnu" and the third book "Talks With Christ and His Teachers" are primarily transcriptions of trance lectures claimed to have been given by the Vishnu Force, Jesus Christ, and other figures.
