COMMENTARY: OUT-OF-BODY EXPERIENCES EXPANDING OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE AFTERLIFE
For over 2,000 years there have been reports of people finding themselves floating up above their bodies while sleeping, or finding themselves suddenly behind or above their body looking down on it. Many famous writers of last century wote about their OBEs: Ernest Hemingway; Tolstoy; Dostoevsky; Tennyson; Edgar Alan Poe; D H Lawrence; Virginia Woolf. A most highly credible scientist, Dr Robert Crookall, analyzed over 700 reports of OBEs from all over the world. He was surprised that they were all consistent. (Crookall 1970).
As well as spontaneous cases, several controlled experiments have been done. In England the Society for Psychical Research investigated a great number of cases of OBEs. In some of them the person in the out-of-body state could be seen by another person. In the USA Dr. Karlis Osis and Loyd Auerbach worked extensively with Alex Tanous who was able to go out of his body consciously at will. A psychic, Christine Whiting, was able to see Tanous when he was out of his body. She described in detail his position in the room and the shirt with rolled-up sleeves and the corduroy pants he was wearing. Read more about the incredible Alex Tanous. Keith 'Blue' Harary, was able to lie down in a sealed laboratory room and project himself to another house twenty yards away. While there he was able to read letters and report accurately on where the other experimenters were sitting.
The non-profit Monroe Institute has taught tens of thousands of people both in residence and through distance learning to undertake Out-of-Body Journeys. So useful was the program that it was adopted by the American Military as part of the standard training of remote viewers.

JUDY HILLYARD ACCOMPANIES PEOPLE CROSSING OVER One of the practical applications of OBEs is to remove the fear of dying. Toward the end of her 47-year career in critical care nursing and education, Judy Hillyard took two different programs from the Sacred Art of Living Center in Bend, Oregon (USA). She wanted to learn more about working with the dying within critical care in a way that was not being done – helping to support the dying process rather than just trying to stave off death. During one of those sessions, Judy learned about a practice used by some Anam Caras - Celtic words meaning soul friend or soul companion - to assist the dying by escorting the person across the veil at the moment of death.
